1. Acceptance of these terms
These Terms of Use form an agreement between you and Nixlight regarding Gleanbox. By downloading, accessing, or using Gleanbox, you agree to these terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use Gleanbox.
If you use Gleanbox for an organization, you confirm that you have authority to accept these terms for that organization. If you are not legally able to agree on your own, a parent, guardian, or other authorized person must agree for you where permitted by law.
2. What Gleanbox provides
Gleanbox is a local-first tool for capturing, processing, organizing, and reviewing knowledge. Core features can be used without a Gleanbox account. Optional features connect directly to services that you select, including AI providers and Git hosts.
Features may change as the product develops. We may add, modify, suspend, or remove features when reasonably necessary for security, compatibility, legal compliance, or product improvement.
3. Limited license
Subject to these terms and the rules of the app store from which you obtained Gleanbox, Nixlight grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Gleanbox on devices you own or control.
You may not copy, sell, rent, sublicense, distribute, reverse engineer, circumvent access controls, or create derivative works from Gleanbox except where applicable law expressly permits it or where an included open-source license grants additional rights.
4. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- the content you capture, create, submit to connected services, export, or synchronize;
- having the rights and permissions needed to use that content;
- protecting your device, backups, API keys, Git access tokens, and repository;
- reviewing AI output before relying on it; and
- following applicable laws and the terms of third-party services.
You must not use Gleanbox to violate another person's rights, distribute malware, gain unauthorized access, or engage in unlawful activity.
5. AI and other connected services
Bring-your-own AI
Gleanbox does not include hosted AI credits. If you configure Gemini or an OpenAI-compatible service, you enter into a separate relationship with that provider. You are responsible for its account, fees, quotas, content rules, availability, and privacy practices.
AI output can be incomplete, outdated, biased, or incorrect. It is provided as a learning aid, not professional, medical, legal, financial, safety-critical, or other expert advice. Verify important information independently.
Git hosting
Git sync connects to a repository you provide. Your Git provider's terms apply. You are responsible for repository visibility, credential permissions, storage limits, history retention, conflicts, and any provider charges. Gleanbox is not a substitute for understanding the access you grant to a repository.
System services
Notifications, camera, photos, microphone, sharing, text-to-speech, app-store billing, and other platform features depend on your device and operating system. Their availability is not guaranteed by Nixlight.
7. Your data and backups
You retain ownership of the content you create or store in Gleanbox. You grant Nixlight no general license to your learning library because Nixlight does not host it. When you choose a third-party service, you grant that provider the rights needed to process your request under its terms.
Local-first storage gives you control, but it also gives you responsibility. Devices can be lost, damaged, reset, or fail. Files, repositories, credentials, and Git history can be changed or deleted. Maintain appropriate exports or private Git backups for data that matters to you, and test restoration before relying on any single copy.
Deleting raw captures, knowledge entries, decks, local data, exports, or Git history can be irreversible. Read confirmation messages carefully. Nixlight generally cannot recover local data or repositories on your behalf.
8. Intellectual property and feedback
Gleanbox, its visual design, brand, and original software are owned by Nixlight or its licensors. Open-source components remain subject to their respective licenses, which are available in the app.
If you voluntarily send suggestions or feedback, you allow Nixlight to use them without restriction or compensation, provided we do not identify you publicly without permission.
9. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Gleanbox is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of uninterrupted operation, error-free output, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, non-infringement, or permanent compatibility with a device, service, API, or Git host.
FSRS schedules and reminders are tools, not guarantees of learning, recall, exam results, or notification delivery. Operating systems may delay or suppress notifications.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Nixlight will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for loss of data, learning progress, profits, opportunities, or goodwill arising from your use of or inability to use Gleanbox or a connected service.
Where liability cannot be excluded, Nixlight's total liability relating to Gleanbox will be limited to the greater of the amount you paid for Gleanbox during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim or the minimum amount required by applicable law. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
11. Suspension and termination
You may stop using Gleanbox at any time. We may suspend access to a feature or terminate this license if you materially violate these terms, if required by law, or when needed to protect Gleanbox or others from security abuse. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will continue to apply.
12. Changes and general terms
We may update these terms. We will revise the effective date and provide reasonable notice of material changes. Continued use after updated terms take effect means you accept them where permitted by law.
If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect. Failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. These terms do not limit rights that cannot be waived under applicable consumer law. Applicable law and dispute rules will be determined by mandatory law and the jurisdiction connected to the relevant claim.
